Do avoid putting whole, raw pumpkins and other winter squash inside of the refrigerator because they simply won’t hold up. Various horticulture and food safety experts agree, it’s far better to store them alone at 50 degrees Fahrenheit instead. Depending on the species and the relative humidity, they may stay fresh for up to 6 months that way.

Don’t try to save time by buying your holiday turkey several weeks in advance, unless you plan on making good use of your home’s freezer. If you do choose to freeze one, make sure that you allow enough thawing time. For birds that are 16 pounds or more, that could mean letting them take up residence in your home’s fridge for anywhere from two to five days.

Do make it a point to refrigerate any freshly baked pies that are made with custard, meringue, cream and eggs. Just make sure that you let them cool on your kitchen counter first for a full 30 minutes. Oh, and it’s best not to store them in the fridge for more than three days. If you have to absolutely bake your holiday pies before that, go with a fruit version (e.g. apple). They tend to stay fresh in the fridge for approximately five days.

That said, organizing frozen foods is rather self-explanatory when it comes to side-by-side and top models but not the bottom ones. They’re a bit tricky because if filled the wrong way, the pull-out drawers may get jammed shut.

Although we are always happy to come out within 24-hours and professionally service refrigerators whose doors have accidentally been stuck shut, we know many of you would just rather avoid jammed drawers in the first place. So, we’ve put together a few organizational dos and don’ts for households with bottom drawer freezers:

Do remove the bulky packaging whenever possible and put frozen goodies in marked, resealable, freezer bags instead. It will not only save room but make it easier to quickly see at a glance which frozen foods need to be consumed first. Oh, and if you are worried about forgetting the manufacturer’s reheat instructions, stop. Simply cut them off of the box and slip the card into the freezer bag with the food items in question.

Don’t forget to freeze homemade and repackaged items as flat and thin as possible. Afterward, separate your bottom drawer in to designated sections and stick with it so you can store those freezer bags as close together as possible. For example, put frozen veggies on one side of the bottom freezer and frozen meats on the other.

Do utilize the top drawer or basket. Many modern-day, bottom freezer refrigerators come with long, shallow, wire baskets. To make the best of the drawer or basket, use it to store soups and small portion items that may be placed into diminutive, plastic containers (e.g. Chinese take-out pints). And don’t forget to put a label on the top of each container!
