Appliance Repair: Does Your Microwave Cut Off When You’re Reheating Leftovers?

You’re on your own for dinner. So you’ve taken the leftover Chinese food out of the fridge, put it onto a plate and popped it into the microwave. But now there’s an unexpected crack in your fortune cookie to deal with. The microwave won’t stay on long enough to completely reheat your chicken lo mein, won ton soup, spring rolls and pineapple fried rice. The timer is set correctly and everything else seems fine, so what’s the deal? Our appliance repair technicians may be able to shed some light onto your microwave dilemma.
A lot of start and stop related problems tend to trace back to a microwave’s touch pad, control panel and central control board. After all, they are among the microwave’s hardest working components. It could be that the circuitry underneath of the touch pad’s surface has almost completely worn out due to heavy use. There could also be a short in the microwave control panels’ wires or an issue with the wall outlet you’re using to power the unit. They are all easily fixed.
If the touch pad and control boards appear fine, the microwave’s malfunction may be due to a faulty voltage transformer or temperature issues (e.g. overheating). Our appliance repair techs known with certainty that a microwave’s temperature issues are often resolved with the replacement of the unit’s thermostat or thermoprotector.
Depending on the microwave’s make and model, those parts we’ve mentioned above could prove to be quite costly. For instance, some touchpad and control panel assays tend to retail for more than $200 apiece. So if your microwave happens to be very old, and was inexpensive at the time of purchase, it may be more prudent to just replace it. Our appliance repair technicians will be more than happy to provide a price quote on parts and labor upfront. That way, you can decide whether or not a new microwave is in order.

Did you know that every day in this country, roughly 21 people visit a hospital’s emergency department due to injuries that they sustained from a microwave oven? It may seem hard to believe at first, but it’s true. Most visits involve burns but there are occasions when impact injuries are to blame. And that’s not all of the disturbing statistics that our appliance repair pros wanted to share in today’s blog post. It seems that microwaves are also responsible for a surprisingly large number of structure fires and direct property damage.
The National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Analysis and Research Division have been keeping track of microwave related fires for years. Their figures show that the seemingly innocuous kitchen appliances have a history of causing more than 7,000 fires annually, leading to more than $30 million in damages, substantial injuries to humans and minor loss of life. The most common reasons why may be traced back to electrical malfunction or outright appliance failure.
Over the years, entities like the World Health Organization have also expressed concerns over microwaves. However, they were more focused on the amount of radio waves being emitted from the appliances. It was believed that those waves could cause health problems, especially for those individuals outfitted with medical devices (e.g. pacemakers). At the time, it was believed that the frequencies emitted by the appliances and medical devices would react negatively with one another, thereby causing both to fail or otherwise malfunction.
In the years since their initial concerns cropped up, both the healthcare and appliance industry have taken a great number of precautions to significantly reduce those risks. As a result, radio wave exposure is only a concern now when microwaves are malfunctioning. Therefore, having an appliance repair team address any microwave problems early on will often eliminate potential RF exposure altogether.
