At SoBellas Home Services in Las Cruces, our central AC repair techs know people love their homes to look and smell good. That’s part of the reason why we wear those stylish, yellow booties. However, we wanted to caution everyone about following a DIY trend that involves modifying a HVAC unit’s air filters in the name of good scents. Here’s why:
HVAC filters are meant to control the flow of unwanted particulates and keep air circulating. As such, they are manufactured using certain materials and design elements. So it stands to reason that if those materials and design elements are altered, it could negatively impact a central AC system’s operation. Let’s take fabric softener sheets as examples.
no DIY air FreshenersWe have seen well-meaning folks suggest that HVAC owners cover their systems’ air filters with scented dryer sheets to help fill their homes with pleasant scents. What they fail to realize is dryer sheets are not designed with a cooling system’s ventilation needs in mind. So by taping them all over an air filter, it could prohibit the flow of air.
And we can tell you from years of experience that disrupting a HVAC system’s air flow is invariably going to result in one thing, an emergency service request. Similar may be said for foreign chemicals. Essential oils, aerosol sprays, scented liquids and the like could potentially eat away at the filter’s base materials and leave gaping holes.
Now while it is true that HVAC filters are meant to promote air transfer, they are not supposed to allow particulates to enter the system. Obviously having chemical induced holes would permit that to happen. And as we’ve already pointed out, that would likely prompt at least one central AC repair service call.
So, what should Las Cruces homeowners do to freshen up their homes besides altering their HVAC units’ air filters? We have our thoughts on that as well. To find out what they are and learn more about which air freshening methods are safe to use with HVAC systems, please contact us today.
